Ron,
Exciting hunt!
The picture on the web site is excellent.
Here is an account of our hunt:
Hunting
with an Edge
By Neil Clarridge
Distant strains of ferocity alerted us to the chase. As we maneuvered
toward the sound, a hog broke from cover and crossed the trail
100 yards ahead of us. The boar appeared huge in the early morning
light. The Florida Curs (hunting dogs) beleaguered the hog at
every turn.
Taylor Roark and I traveled 13 ½ hours to hunt wild hogs
in Glades County, Florida with Rons Guide Service. Roark
and three of his classmates accompanied me on a bear hunt in New
Brunswick for their senior trip. His three classmates had brought
home meat from Canada, but Roark was unable to kill a bear. Roark
had hunted honorably, but had to pass up the large sow he saw
because it had cubs. A nagging sense of disappointment provoked
my need to atone for the unsuccessful trip to Canada.
When the schedule unexpectedly opened, phone calls turned the
time off into a whirlwind hog hunt. I called Taylor first, then
Captain Ron, and finally a hotel in the area. All was set for
Tuesday, July 28. We left Monday morning, hunted Tuesday morning,
and returned home Tuesday evening.
The GPS made navigation easy. The hotel was not fancy, but it
was clean, neat, and in a quiet neighborhood. We woke early Tuesday
and headed to a restaurant for breakfast. A picture of a man hoisting
a huge Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake graced the wall near our
table. After eating eggs, sausage, and grits, we headed to the
meeting place. We were expected at 6:30 A.M.
The dogs in the back of the truck made it easy to identify our
hosts. There we met Dick, Raymond, and Donald. We followed them
to a store, dropped off my car, loaded the guides truck
with gear, and headed out. The guides wanted to know why we had
guns. We said that we usually take guns when hunting.
Dick asked if we had a knife. I pulled out my fathers M4
USMC bayonet. Dick nodded his approval as we loaded the truck
for the ride to the hunting ground. On the way, we drove by a
slough where a lone alligator slowly swam toward shore.
We soon found ourselves in the middle of a tropical jungle. The
vegetation was tall, thick, and seemingly impenetrable. A swath
of paths cut by a bush hog provided a labyrinth of corridors through
the area. Ray and Donald turned loose the hounds. Dick stayed
with us as the dogs combed the area for scent. As Dick explained
how to take a boar with a knife, a lone opossum crept by the truck.
Excited barking brought instant intensity to the hunt. The boar
crossed the swath with Raymond and Donald in tow. Taylor was on
point for this one. He grabbed the bayonet as I loaded the shotgun.
We caught up with Raymond who promptly sent us into the thick
of the fray where Donald and the dogs had the boar at bay. The
game plan was simple, Donald would help Taylor stretch out the
hogs back end and then Taylor would stab the hog behind
the front shoulder with the knife.
The shotgun was there in case something went wrong. Donald and
Taylor worked together to subdue the beast. Taylor was a fearless
warrior while he made meat of the critter. When the deed was done,
Taylor posed for pictures with his trophy. It was then that the
fire ants launched their attack. Taylor got the worst of it, but
we all got a taste of his suffering. We left the spot in great
haste dragging 175 pounds of boar hog behind us.
The dogs were cast in another direction, and before long, they
were amongst a sounder (a group of wild hogs consisting of breeding
age sows along with juveniles) of hogs. The dogs separated a mature
sow from the group and brought it to bay in a small clearing.
The bayonet came from the sheath as I approached the scene. Excitement
built with every step toward the hog. Eyes and mind came to focus
as everything else faded into the background. I was on a mission.
Raymond caught my arm just before I entered the circle of harm.
He said, Hold on son. We need to wait until the dogs get
a better hold on that hog.
Raymonds discerning eye evaluated the ongoing situation
until it was safe for us to proceed. Twenty seconds later, we
waded into the fray, grabbed the hind parts, and thrust the knife
home. After a few pictures, we lugged 150 pounds of pork to the
truck.
Now that the excitement was over, the chore of butchering began.
Dick had everything needed to process the hogs at his house. Donald
and Raymond took to the chore with great skill. They used a coconut
knife for much of the work.
The guides packed the meat in coolers, added ice, and poured a
gallon of vinegar in the cooler with the boars meat in order
to mellow its taste. The guides were expert in every aspect of
the hunt. The boar was caped for delivery to Adam Nicholsons
taxidermy studio in Chatham.
The ride home was uneventful. Some have questioned the sanity
of hunting hogs with a knife. Given the close quarters confining
the participants, and the pandemonium surrounding a shot, the
knife is much safer than a firearm because there are no projectiles
to hit a dog or ricochet into an unintended target.
The thick vegetation and the relentless dogs tire the hog as it
tries to evade capture. A hunter smart enough to listen to the
guide and cool enough to follow his directions will have a safe,
exciting hunt.

The Florida wild boar is the classic
American razor-back, piney woods rooter. They are not native to Florida.
There are theories
about the origins of Florida's feral hogs. One is they're descendants
of the swine that Ponce de Leon, Hernando DeSoto and other early Spanish explorers brought
over from Spain on their ships in the 1500's. The black Spanish
hogs quickly populated the state of Florida. The early settlers
released domestic boars to up-grade the Florida feral strain which
accounts for the color markings we see that sometimes resemble
domestic hog breeds. Gestation
is 115 days. They have on a average of 2 litters per year with
about 10 young pigs per litter. They grow fast and reach 100 pounds
in 12 months. They are omnivorous. eating all kinds of foods (plants
and animals) indiscriminately. "About 1 million
feral hogs live in the state of Florida"
A large wild boar
hog will weigh over 200 pounds, but most run in the 150 pound
range. A boar has two long tusks in the lower jaw and two whetters
directly above them that he rubs the lower tusks against to keep
them sharp. Tusks grow throughout the life of the boar. A wild
boar is considered a trophy with tusks that measure 2 inches from
the gum line. Sows (female hogs) do not have long tusks. They
have poor eyesight, good hearing and an excellent sense of smell.
Their meat unlike the domestic hog is lean and very edible. The
Florida wild boar (feral hog) is considered a trespass animal
and not managed by the state of Florida. "Hunters are welcome
and even encouraged to hunt them year-round"
The wild boar hog
hunting area and terrain you will hunt vary from sugar cane fields,
palmetto thickets, to woodlands with ponds and marsh. These areas
are privately owned. Areas to hunt are carefully chosen by our
guides prior to your arrival. The area that best indicates it
is holding a good concentration of wild boar hogs is of course
selected for the day's hunt.
Our hunts are fair chase exciting dog hunting.

GUIDED
HUNTING WITH DOGS METHOD
Wild
boar (hog - as they are called locally) hunting with dogs is a
very exciting sport. It also is the most successful way of making
a kill. High ground that offers a wild boar hog hunter a good
view and shot at a passing hog will be selected for a stand by
one of the guides - who will also stay on stand with the hunter.
The other guide and the dogs will then enter the woods at a considerable
distance in front of the hunters so as to drive a wild boar hog
or hogs towards them. During these drives the dogs will usually
bay up the hog before it reaches the hunters. The sound of yelping
dogs and the squeals of the hog would surely indicate such and
the need for the hunters to move towards the sounds of the battle.
The dogs (Florida cur dog - combination of hound and bulldog)
are trained to hold the hog at bay. Once the dogs have the hog
at bay the hunter can carefully take aim and shoot the hog.

FIREARM
WEAPONS
A wild boar hog hunter may use
a rifle (any
caliber), black powder
(any
caliber), shotgun
(smooth bore or rifled slugs), and/or a handgun (any caliber from a 22 mag.to
a S&W 50 caliber handgun).There are no restrictions
on how many shells you can have in a rifle or handgun clip. Banana
30 round or more clips are legal but they would be a lot of fire
power to bag a hog with. Due
to the lush undergrowth a shotgun with deer slugs and a good sidearm
are by far the preferred weapons. A firearm (12 gauge shotgun)
will be furnished free of charge to a hog hunter who doesn't own
or is unable to bring one with him. Hunters are required to furnish
12 gauge deer slug shells (smooth bore or rifled barrel) in 2
& 3/4 inch shell size. A five shell 2 & 3/4 inch box per
each hunter will be enough. Shotgun shells and all types of ammo
can be purchased without a license anywhere in the state of Florida.

KILL RATE
QUESTION:
what
is the cost if I want to kill another hog?
ANSWER: a
hunter who has reached his quota kill for the day can "only"
if we have the time and do not have other hunters waiting to go
out hunting kill an additional hog at the same rate of $245.00.
An additional kill is the same amount of guide hunting time, guaranteed
kill charge, tips and free cleaning and quartering that we would
get from another hog hunter.
If
a hunter is interested in killing additional hogs it would be
wise to book your hunt for the amount of hogs you want to kill.
This way we can schedule your hunt so that it doesn't interfere
with our other scheduled activates and other hunters waiting to
go out hunting.

First let me begin by saying -- This was the best family hunt/experience
we could have only dream about.
This being our first family hunt we did not know what to expect
-- specially since we were hunting Pig with Compound Bows.
The morning hunt was great -- we started at 9 am and had 4 complete
kills by 12:30 -- One being a Trophy Kill
Understand 2 kids ages 8 and 11 as well as My wife and Myself
-- Complete Newbie's to Hunting with Compound Bows
Our Guide was extremely knowledgeable, polite and knew exactly
what he was doing.
The Dogs also added to the morning excitement of the hunt.
I cant thank you enough for making this experience one that the
entire family will never forget-- the kids are still talking about.
My wife will send you more a more details email about the actual
hunt and the eating afterwards
We would recommend your service anytime --
We took plenty of pictures --- How do we go about placing them

Capt.
Ron,
Hello! We had a great wild boar spear/knife hunt with your guide
Harvey! It was all you advertised it to be and more. It was an
exciting hunt for my 22 year old son, my 13 year old son, my 13
year old sons friend, my 35 year old friend and myself the 49
year old. I of course got the biggest one and some battle scars
from the charge as I got knocked on my butt from being a bit slow,
however I got up and took him down with the traditional German
Boar Spear from Cold Steel before he killed me. It was really
something and all the people at the farm were just great at what
they do and very hospitable. We boned out our meat right there
in a few hours and left with great pictures and lifelong memories!
I would and will highly recommend this hunt to all fathers and
sons or friends who want to have a great time with lifelong memories!
Thank You For Your Service!

Hello
Captain Ron,
Had
a great time with your guides Donald and Dick! You have not lived
until you gone on a wild hog hunt in Florida with Rod Guide Service!
I booked a hunt for me to shoot a wild hog with a shotgun and
have my son Josh who is 11 years old come along and watch. Our
guide Dick suggested that I let my son Josh kill a wild hog with
my knife. This would be Josh's first real hunting experience.
It was too cool! Donald, Dick and the dogs chased and pinned the
hog down while Josh jumped in and kill the hog with a pocket knife.
Josh is the Man! It was a hunt of a life time for both Josh and
me! We will do a double next year! Donald and Dick butchered the
hog up in no time flat, put it on ice and that evening I was cooking
wild hog chops on the grill! It doesn't get any better then that.

I
was in Orlando for a conference and drove down afterwards for
a boar hunt. I had never hunted with dogs before and had never
killed game with anything other than a gun of some kind, so this
was a first for me in more ways than one. I found the meeting
place without difficulty and met the outfitter and guides right
on time. I followed the guides to where we
would be hunting and parked while they got the dogs ready. I grabbed
my sword and jumped in the truck and we were off: it was right
around 0730. The dogs saw an otter early on, but initially didn't
have any luck finding a hog. We split into two groups, one guide
with 3 dogs on one side of a parcel of land and me, the second
guide, and 2 dogs on the other side, working towards the center.
After a little while the first guide and his dogs had some luck
and we moved towards the noise of the baying. After a few minutes
we got close enough to see the other guide and the dogs keeping
a black and angry looking hog at bay. I slipped the sword from
the scabbard and moved in. I had never seen the dogs before the
hunt, but they knew what to do: as I approached the pig, a pair
of them grabbed the hog by each ear and pulled it's head towards
the ground and away from me. It was easy enough to slip up beside
the hog and slide the sword behind the ribs, up though the heart
and lungs area. I did it once from each side, just to speed things
along, although I had to be careful not to over penetrate and
hit one of the dogs. After that, it was simple enough to load
up the truck and head back for a quick and efficient butchering
and I was on my way. The hunt was a great experience and my only
regret was that it was over so soon.
