Hey
Captain Ron,
Thanks again for arranging my hunt to kill two hogs yesterday.
I had a blast! The guides and dogs were great and they let me
do it my way...just the hogs, dogs and me!
They kept an eye on things and found the two pigs in no time......the
first was nice but the second was a big one!
First set of pics is basically me with the hogs right before the
guides did a marvelous job of cleaning and preparing them for
my trip home. I will have to say I was not fully prepared to bring
that much meat home, but as it is now with my meat market getting
final prepared, it was worth it!
Best hunting experience of my life. Will definitely do it again!
Will follow this email with two more showing the demise of hog
1 and hog 2!
Thanks again.

Dear Ron,
Thanks
very much for a great time during our boar hunt last month. I
have written a hunt report below, which you can feel free to cut
and paste. We saw that you had put a picture of us on the website
and we were very excited.
However,
I would like you to please take off my last name and email address
from your website. I prefer to keep my contact information private.
You can just list me as "Chris from Fairfield, CT"
Thanks
for a great trip...some of my friends are interested in doing
it again!
I
wanted to thank you for helping us have a great time on my bachelor
party. Our party of 10 guys had a blast. Our party started on
Thursday around noon. We drove up from Miami and arrived to meet
Casey, our guide. After loading up the dogs, the boys hopped into
the swamp buggy and we went out into the glades. Casey let the
hounds catch a scent and it wasn't long before we were in pursuit
of our first hog. As we approached, Casey quickly identified it
as a female, and knowing that we planned a pig roast, suggested
we give it a shot with the spear. As the man of honor, I was granted
with the first kill, jumped out and with his instruction, took
down my first hog.
After
the first kill, the gang was pumped up - we loaded up again and
we were soon on the trail of another hog. My brother was the next
one up and told Casey that he wanted to take down a trophy to
mount - turned out that the next hog was a big male with 2.5 inch
tusks. He jumped out and took it down with a single shot. When
he finally got his trophy, he set it up for mounting with the
Taxidermy company.
The
rest of our party had a great time as we took down a total of
6 hogs that afternoon. We had guys taking them down on foot, from
the buggy on the run, with the shotgun and with the spear! At
the end of the trip, the guides were fantastic and cleaned and
quartered our kill. They even left the female hog as a whole carcass
for our pig roast. We ended up making some grilled boar shish
kebabs, and had a marinated boar that was slow cooked in a big
Cuban-style china box that weekend.
Thanks
for a great time - my best man can't wait to get his boar mount
and the rest of the party is psyched to do it again sometime soon.

Subject: Bill & Pete's KNIFE-only wild Pig hunt in Florida
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2010 07:59:20 -0500
SHORT:
Pete Clavey & Bill went to Lakeport, Florida on 2/27/10 and
hunted wild free ranging pigs using Dogs using nothing more then
our knifes..i.e we didn't use gun or bow. We both got the first
2 hogs the dogs bayed and both had a FANTASTIC time!
LONG: Hunting educational note: One question that might come up
is WHY hunt hogs? Well, besides them be delicious, they are a
non-indigenous and terribly destructive to the environment. To
put it in perspective, you do NOT need to buy a license to hunt
them and when the State doesn't want any money to hunt, you know
they want them all out of their state by almost any means possible.
Personnel
note: Another question that has come up is WHY hunt them with
a knife? First off, because I can! Now there aren't too many animals
this is possible with and even with pigs it can be dangerous because
they have very sharp tusks, "teeth", that can slice
a person up, but with using the dogs to keep them occupied makes
it feasible. I watched a hunting show a couple years ago with
Tredd Barta who did the same hunt and I'm paraphrasing here, but
this is what he had to say which really got me interested.. "hunters
today distance themselves from their game with rifles and even
these long range shots with bows. hunting with a knife is producing
the same outcome as these but if you really want to have a connection
with your quarry and have a complete understanding with what we
"are doing", you have to try it at these close quarters."
On
to the hunt... Pete and I booked with Ron's guide service http://www.a-wild-boar-hog-hunting-florida-guide-service.com/ and met him and
the guides at 7am. The guides Donald/Eric had 3 dogs that were
used to track and bay the pigs and 2 others that were primarily
used to "hold/catch" the pigs. We all traveled onto
some private ground and Don and the bay dogs took off and it wasn't
30 minutes later we got the call on the 2-way to get going. At
this point things happened REALLY fast as these guys must have
assumed we knew what was going on because we didn't get any extra
instruction before the truck stopped and I had a pig corned 50
yards away with a pack of dogs going crazy. The job of the "catch"
dog is grab the pig by the ear and not let go no matter what,
which gives me the reality safe time to use my knife to make "the
connection" to the pig. After about 4 connections with my
grandpa Halls WWII banette and 10 seconds later it was ALL over
and time for some pictures.
Next
was Pete's turn and in a similar fashion we had another pig bayed
in about 30 minutes. Pete asked me to to video his which was pretty
cool. If you watch the video you can see that Pete's pig was in
much thicker brush which made it a litter harder to make the "connection"
but Pete got it done with his ka-bar.
There
was another hunter that went out with us using a 12 gauge and
it was no where near as exciting as what Pete and I did. After
the 3 pigs were in the truck we headed back to the guides house
to quarter them, as I butchered them at our rental house in Marathon
later.. shhhh,,,,. Oddly Pete/I and Cindy/Corrine stopped at a
winery and were all sampling Florida's finest less then 3 hours
after killing two wild pigs with knifes which we all had a chuckle
over. And of course we had fresh pork chops on the grill for lunch
the next day.

ADDITIONAL
KILL RATE
QUESTION:
what
is the cost if I want to kill another hog?
ANSWER: a
hunter who has reached his quota kill for the day can "only"
if we have the time and do not have other hunters waiting to go
out hunting kill an additional hog at the same rate of $245.00.
An additional kill is the same amount of guide hunting time, guaranteed
kill charge, tips and free cleaning and quartering that we would
get from another hog hunter.
If
a hunter is interested in killing additional hogs it would be
wise to book your hunt for the amount of hogs you want to kill.
This way we can schedule your hunt so that it doesn't interfere
with our other scheduled activates and other hunters waiting to
go out hunting.
GUARANTEED
KILL CHARGE OR NO PAY POLICY
Each hunter
is "guaranteed" a kill of "one" wild hog of
either sex
(sow, boar or trophy
wild boar),
big or small during
a day of hog hunting.
A
hunter
has no choice as to not killing the first hog bayed up by the
dogs, spotted or stalked.
The only exception to this policy are very small hogs (that are
under the State of Florida 15 inch shoulder height) spotted, stalked
or held at bay by the dogs will be set free. A hunter's guaranteed
kill charge of $100.00 - which is paid upon arrival in cash -
"will be refunded" in the event we were not able or
the dogs were unable to provide a hunter with an opportunity to
kill a hog. Our refund policy is not applicable due to poor shots.
An attempt by your guide however will be made to try and catch
a hog that was shot at and missed or that was shot and wounded
by a hunter.
The Florida wild boar is the classic
American razor-back, piney woods rooter. They are not native to Florida.
There are theories
about the origins of Florida's feral hogs. One is they're descendants
of the swine that Ponce de Leon, Hernando DeSoto and other early Spanish explorers brought
over from Spain on their ships in the 1500's. The black Spanish
hogs quickly populated the state of Florida. The early settlers
released domestic boars to up-grade the Florida feral strain which
accounts for the color markings we see that sometimes resemble
domestic hog breeds. Gestation
is 115 days. They have on a average of 2 litters per year with
about 10 young pigs per litter. They grow fast and reach 100 pounds
in 12 months. They are omnivorous. eating all kinds of foods (plants
and animals) indiscriminately. "About 1 million
feral hogs live in the state of Florida"
A large wild boar
hog will weigh over 200 pounds, but most run in the 150 pound
range. A boar has two long tusks in the lower jaw and two whetters
directly above them that he rubs the lower tusks against to keep
them sharp. Tusks grow throughout the life of the boar. A wild
boar is considered a trophy with tusks that measure 2 inches from
the gum line. Sows (female hogs) do not have long tusks. They
have poor eyesight, good hearing and an excellent sense of smell.
Their meat unlike the domestic hog is lean and very edible. The
Florida wild boar (feral hog) is considered a trespass animal
and not managed by the state of Florida. "Hunters are welcome
and even encouraged to hunt them year-round"
The wild boar hog
hunting area and terrain you will hunt vary from sugar cane fields,
palmetto thickets, to woodlands with ponds and marsh.

GUIDED
HUNTING WITH DOGS METHOD
Wild
boar (hog - as they are called locally) hunting with dogs is a
very exciting sport. It also is the most successful way of making
a kill. High ground that offers a wild boar hog hunter a good
view and shot at a passing hog will be selected for a stand by
one of the guides - who will also stay on stand with the hunter.
The other guide and the dogs will then enter the woods at a considerable
distance in front of the hunters so as to drive a wild boar hog
or hogs towards them. During these drives the dogs will usually
bay up the hog before
it reaches the hunters. The sound of yelping dogs and the squeals
of the hog would surely indicate such and the need for the hunters
to move towards the sounds of the battle. The dogs (Florida cur
dog - combination of hound and bulldog) are trained to hold the
hog at bay. Once the dogs have the hog at bay the hunter can carefully
take aim and shoot the hog.

FIREARM
WEAPONS
A wild boar hog hunter may use
a rifle (any
caliber), black powder
(any
caliber), shotgun
(smooth bore or rifled slugs), and/or a handgun (any caliber from a 22 mag.to
a S&W 50 caliber handgun).There are no restrictions
on how many shells you can have in a rifle or handgun clip. Banana
30 round or more clips are legal but they would be a lot of fire
power to bag a hog with. Due
to the lush undergrowth a shotgun with deer slugs and a good sidearm
are by far the preferred weapons. A firearm (12 gauge shotgun)
will be furnished free of charge to a hog hunter who doesn't own
or is unable to bring one with him. Hunters are required to furnish
12 gauge deer slug shells (smooth bore or rifled barrel) in 2
& 3/4 inch shell size. A five shell 2 & 3/4 inch box per
each hunter will be enough. Shotgun shells and all types of ammo
can be purchased without a license anywhere in the state of Florida.

First let me begin by saying -- This was the best family hunt/experience
we could have only dream about.
This being our first family hunt we did not know what to expect
-- specially since we were hunting Pig with Compound Bows. The
morning hunt was great -- we started at 9 am and had 4 complete
kills by 12:30 -- One being a Trophy Kill. Understand 2 kids ages
8 and 11 as well as My wife and Myself -- Complete Newbie's to
Hunting with Compound Bows. Our Guide was extremely knowledgeable,
polite and knew exactly what he was doing. The Dogs also added
to the morning excitement of the hunt. I can't thank you enough
for making this experience one that the entire family will never
forget-- the kids are still talking about. My wife will send you
a more details email about the actual hunt and the eating afterwards.
We would recommend your service anytime -- We took plenty of pictures
--- How do we go about placing them on your web site?
Thanks Again

Here's
a e-mail spear & knife hunt testimonial I received from the

Capt.
Ron,
Hello! We had a great wild boar spear/knife hunt with your guide
Harvey! It was all you advertised it to be and more. It was an
exciting hunt for my 22 year old son, my 13 year old son, my 13
year old sons friend, my 35 year old friend and myself the 49
year old. I of course got the biggest one and some battle scars
from the charge as I got knocked on my butt from being a bit slow,
however I got up and took him down with the traditional German
Boar Spear from Cold Steel before he killed me. It was really
something and all the people at the farm were just great at what
they do and very hospitable. We boned out our meat right there
in a few hours and left with great pictures and lifelong memories!
I would and will highly recommend this hunt to all fathers and
sons or friends who want to have a great time with lifelong memories!
Thank You For Your Service!

Hello
Captain Ron,
Had
a great time with your guides Donald and Dick! You have not lived
until you gone on a wild hog hunt in Florida with Rod Guide Service!
I booked a hunt for me to shoot a wild hog with a shotgun and
have my son Josh who is 11 years old come along and watch. Our
guide Dick suggested that I let my son Josh kill a wild hog with
my knife. This would be Josh's first real hunting experience.
It was too cool! Donald, Dick and the dogs chased and pinned the
hog down while Josh jumped in and kill the hog with a pocket knife.
Josh is the Man! It was a hunt of a life time for both Josh and
me! We will do a double next year! Donald and Dick butchered the
hog up in no time flat, put it on ice and that evening I was cooking
wild hog chops on the grill! It doesn't get any better then that.

I
was in Orlando for a conference and drove down afterwards for
a boar hunt. I had never hunted with dogs before and had never
killed game with anything other than a gun of some kind, so this
was a first for me in more ways than one. I found the meeting
place without difficulty and met the outfitter and guides right
on time. I followed the guides to where we
would be hunting and parked while they got the dogs ready. I grabbed
my sword and jumped in the truck and we were off: it was right
around 0730. The dogs saw an otter early on, but initially didn't
have any luck finding a hog. We split into two groups, one guide
with 3 dogs on one side of a parcel of land and me, the second
guide, and 2 dogs on the other side, working towards the center.
After a little while the first guide and his dogs had some luck
and we moved towards the noise of the baying. After a few minutes
we got close enough to see the other guide and the dogs keeping
a black and angry looking hog at bay. I slipped the sword from
the scabbard and moved in. I had never seen the dogs before the
hunt, but they knew what to do: as I approached the pig, a pair
of them grabbed the hog by each ear and pulled it's head towards
the ground and away from me. It was easy enough to slip up beside
the hog and slide the sword behind the ribs, up though the heart
and lungs area. I did it once from each side, just to speed things
along, although I had to be careful not to over penetrate and
hit one of the dogs. After that, it was simple enough to load
up the truck and head back for a quick and efficient butchering
and I was on my way. The hunt was a great experience and my only
regret was that it was over so soon.

Capt. Ron,
I
just wanted to thank you for the hog hunt today. This was my daughters
first hunting experience and I couldn't have asked for better.
Johnny and Donald were very good knowing it was her first time.
They were patient and informative. I would say the results speak
for themselves. Once again, thanks and we WILL be back.
