Millett Sights Hunt at Rons Guide Service January 2007
By Steve
Langford
On the morning
of 16th January 2007, 8 hunters from Millett Sights, a California
based scope and mount company visited Rons Guide Service
in Okeechobee, FL for a hog hunt to test the new model scopes.
We were guided by one of Ron's most capable and courteous guide.
First up
to hunt after we were all loaded up on swamp buggy, was Jim Millett
the President of Millett Sights using the new ZOOM DOT red dot
scope, mounted on a S&W 500 mag handgun. Not long after starting
to hunt, we spotted our prey. As several hogs ran out of the brush,
Jim took aim at the running lead hog. Just as the pig went into
the brush there was a report of Jims hand cannon. We lost track
of the pig as it charged back into the heavy brush. We were loaded
on the buggy that went around the corner and there we saw the
hogs on the trail. One more quick shot by Jim and the first pig
was ready for the hunter photos.
Jim Millett
takes aim with the ZOOM DOT scope on 500 Mag.
Next up
was Big Steve from Pennsylvania using a 45 auto pistol he harvested
a nice pig at 30 yards in the heavy brush. He finished the pig
off with a fast cut to its neck with a 5 inch knife. He had a
great time and is looking forward to the next hunt.
In line
for the next pig was JL, Milletts Project Manager to test
the new DMS-1 circle dot 1x4 scope. It was not long before we
had a hog running in the open area and JL made one perfect shot
at 50 yards at the running pig. One shot, one dead hog. JL affirmed
that all the sights features worked . Both design and accuracy
of the scope contributed to the ease of making a hard running
shot.
JLs
quick shot took this porky pig at 50 yards on the run using the
new Millett DMS-1 scope.
The next
shooter was Art, a good friend from New Mexico using a 45 ACP
pistol. Rons dogs were trained to bay the hog and Art dispatched
the pig in short order.
What could
go wrong on a perfect day for hunting when we were all on the
swamp buggy not too hot, no bugs and with 8 shooters rearing to
fire at their first prey in sight.
The excitement
is priceless.
Milletts
Production Supervisor, Marcello chose a 45 pistol for a weapon,
loaded with premium ammo and backed with a knife, he took a nice
hog. A knife can be an essential and exciting finisher to a good
hunt.
I was next
in line to try my hand on hog hunting. It was not long before
we had some pigs on the run out on the open area, using the DMS
-1 scope on the 223 I rifle, I took a lead on the largest one
and fired. I did not estimate the true speed of the fast running
pig and hit further back than I would have liked, but with a quick
follow up shot, the hog was in the bag. A fun and challenging
hunt.
The day
was a great harvest of 9 hogs from 8 shooters, lots of fun and
good credits on the datas of the new scopes. Rons guide
service took good care of us and made sure that everyone had a
wonderful time. Our guide was an expert in his field and did a
great job assisting the shooters get their game. We will come
back some time soon to repeat this fun and exciting experience.
Ron , thanks from all the guys at Millett Sights.

The hunt was great. The guides were awesome and the dogs really
knew what they were doing. I stabbed a 160 pound boar 3 times
with a bowie knife, which seemed to only piss it off. I finally
had to finish it with a 12 gauge slug. I went home with a TON
of meat. Thanks.

Ron and Co.
Had a great
day on the afternoon of 22nd December 2006. The guide was very
helpful and managed to locate us two boars very quickly. We did
not even need to get the dogs out! Ten out of ten for a great
way to spend the afternoon especially for two guys from the UK
and Ireland who don't get much shooting or hunting in anytime
of the year. I will be back next time I am in Florida. Thanks
again

Attached is a pic of my successful boar hunt on December 18, 2006.
What a GREAT time! Outstanding guide, well-maintained swamp-buggy
and VERY good dogs!
This was my first hog hunt and first time hunting anything - besides
USPSA and IDPA cardboard targets - with my Kimber Eclipse 1911
in 45ACP. Told the guide I was just looking for a "meat pig"
for the freezer and that's exactly what he got for me - a 155
pound boar.
Made the shot below the left shoulder with a Black Hills 230gr
JHP at 17 yards; that was enough to put him down.
Overall a GREAT hunt - Good time at a fair price! Count me in
again for a hunt next December!

The hunt was everything we hoped it be- a challenge, adventure
and an incredible lot of fun.
My brother-in-law
took one hog with a slug gun; I took two with a Taurus .44 Magnum
revolver- in my opinion the best tool for the job- the first within
feet in a sawgrass stand and the second at 30 yards running down
a drainage. Our guide was an excellent resource and good company.

The Hunters: James Thomas and Shelley Yates. James gave Shelley
this trip as a Christmas present! We met Ron and his guys at a
specified location on the day of our hunt. The three guides couldn't
have been more fun to be around or more knowledgeable about the
hunt. We had a marvelous time. Would recommend it to anyone. Do
not hesitate to book this hunt. We are already planning to go
on
more hunts with Ron and his guys. The Moore Haven area is what
Florida is all about. With it's lush un-developed tropical landscape,
kind unpretentious people and abundant wildlife. We saw two
endangered bird species on the trip. The caracara and the sand-hill
crane. Our wild hogs seemed like very healthy animals. The dogs
were
well-trained, clean and pleasant when they were not working the
hogs.
What a blast!!! Our guns were a Colt 45-Gold Cup National Match
(Shelley) & Colt 10mm Delta Elite (James).
