Cap'n Ron:
Brett and I had a very good time.
I shot a 150# hog, Brett's was a 125# hog.
The guides were great and very professional. Brett and I are pretty
easy
going, preferring to enjoy the outdoor experience as much as the
kill
itself. This makes the guides feel more at ease and makes for
a far more
relaxing hunt.
We had the boys skin the hogs and leave them whole as the Mosquito
Creek
Grocery in Okeechobee preferred them that way. You might want
to mention
this to the guides in the event that you have another client that
wants to
have his hogs butchered locally. The cutting job done by Mosquito
Creek was
top notch, much better than most of the work I have had done in
the past.
Butchering the two hogs cost $50 total.
As you may recall, we both used .357 revolvers, and although both
of us
were a bit uneasy about this at first, it proved to be a very
good choice.
I would recommend using a handgun over a long arm to your customers
as it
was much easier to wield in the thick cover.
My hog was a pretty straight forward affair, a broadside shot
at five
paces. The hog didn't show any sign of being hit and started to
run, so I
cut loose with a second round that dropped it instantly. The next
time I go
out with your crew, I will wait for a head shot.
Brett's hog was an entirely different matter. The cover was so
thick
that we were all crouched over as we came up on the hog. I was
following
Brett in the hope of getting some good pictures. Brett cranked
off his first
round at about three yards, driving the 180 grain bullet straight
through
from top to bottom. Unfortunately, this served only to tick the
hog off, and
it promptly turned on him, charging straight between his legs.
At that point
I decided that discretion was the better part of valor, so I,
along with one
of the guides, backed ourselves out of the way so Brett could
get a
follow-up shot. Within a second, Brett was waist deep in the creek,
along
with the dogs, and of course the hog. His second shot was point-blank,
straight to the back of the head.
If any of your customers are apprehensive over eating wild hog,
let me
put their minds at ease. The meat was as good as domestic pork,
only much
firmer. We barbequed the ribs and cut up some of the ham steaks
for
sandwiches and everyone was impressed. A crock pot or other slow
cooking
method is a must, however no one should fear eating the wild hog.
On my flight back to Philadelphia I was seated next to a young
guy, a
former chef who now manages several up-scale restaurants in the
area. He
commented that he loved to get wild hog, as it could be prepared
in so many
ways without fear of overcooking.
I would be happy to recommend your guide service to anyone interested
in
hog hunting and will forward photos of our hunt to you by e-mail
shortly.
Many thanks,
Jim
